This type of board also doesn't have a FAQ page, so I'm improvising one here. Items will be added or changed as the need arises.
For technical help on things like registering, logging in and posting messages, look at the help link on the top of every page.
Do I have to be registered to post?
Yes, because I like to have people be accountable for their comments, and it lets people know who's around at any given time. Really, it's an easy enough process, so there's no reason not to register.
What kind of topics are allowed?
Nothing is specifically disallowed. Generally, you should try to stick to the theme of the forum you're in (i.e., don't post about Tennis in Cross Country).
What if the topic doesn't fit in an existing forum?
At this point, there's room for additional forums, especially in the General area. If enough people ask for a forum about a given topic, I'll probably make one (this will naturally decline as more forums are added).
Are there any restrictions on message content?
Type like an educated person, as in using proper grammer and spelling if possible. Don't use silly Internet abbreviations as normal parts of speech, that's just annoying. And if possible, avoid curse words; if you're going to insult someone or something, be creative about it.
One more thing: Personal attacks against other board members will be very much frowned upon. Attacking their opinions is tolerable to a degree, but remember that in the end most of you are just text on a screen to each other.
Do I have to use an avatar?
No, but they're much encouraged, as it's an easy way to visually identify a poster. Just pick one from the default list if you don't want to hunt down a custom one for yourself. Barring that, there are plenty of sites with avatar galleries on the net you can look through. Just make sure it's about 100x100 or less in size, and doesn't have text all over it.
What does my rank mean, and how do I change it?
The standard ranks are derived from how many times you've posted. There are only five of them including the one for new members, so I have a few more already in mind for people with longer tenures than the highest standard rank. Don't take this as a license to post random junk in order to get a higher rank, however; I'll more than likely respond to that by keeping your rank where it is permanently (or at least until you shape up).
How about custom ranks?
I have the ability to give people unique ranks. I'll mostly do this for people that I think deserve special recognition. For example, if Jonathan Johnson were to sign up and start posting (and he could prove it was really him), I'd probably give him a rank like "800 meter school record holder" or "A faster man than you". For regular board members, it mostly depends on how much you contribute to intelligent discussions and act like a sensible human being. So really, don't sweat it if you don't have one, as it's not that big a privelige.
Who are the moderators?
At the moment, I'm the only one, and have absolute control over all aspects of this board. Whether I give others moderator power in the future depends mostly on how big the board gets. If it gets too big in some aspects, I'll start looking for people to help out. For now, though, I'm the one and only person in charge, so bring your concerns to me.
